The problem

Why molds fail to deliver - and how we fix it

Most buyers lose time and money on the same handful of mold problems. As a China mold manufacturer, we remove every one of them.

Molds wear out too fast

Cheap steel and poor heat treatment mean cracks, flash, and a short mold life. You pay twice for the same tool.

Lead times slip

Weeks become months. A late mold pushes back your whole product launch and your customer's order.

Bad surface finish

Sink marks, flow lines, and rough texture ruin the look of every part that comes out of the tool.

Hidden tooling costs

Vague quotes and surprise change orders blow up the budget after the project has already started.

No DFM feedback

Design flaws are found only at mold trial. Fixes cost far more at that stage than they would up front.

No support after delivery

When a tool needs repair or a running change, the supplier stops answering. Your line sits idle.

Top Clamp Plate Cavity Plate (A) Sprue Parting Line Core Plate (B) Ejector Pins Ejector / Bottom Plate Molten Plastic In

A two-part mold: cavity and core close around the part, plastic fills the cavity, then ejector pins push the finished part out.

What is mold making

The tool that turns plastic pellets into your product

Mold making is the design and manufacturing of the steel or aluminum tool that shapes melted plastic - or metal - into a finished part. The tool has two halves. The cavity side forms the outside, the core side forms the inside. A runner feeds material in, cooling channels pull heat out, and an ejector system pushes the part free.

  • Design & DFM first - we review wall thickness, draft, gate position and shrinkage before any steel is cut.
  • Steel and aluminum options - from soft tooling for prototypes to hardened steel for millions of shots.
  • Built to run - a good mold holds tolerance, cools fast, and ejects cleanly, cycle after cycle.
  • One partner, start to finish - design, machining, trial, and maintenance under one roof in China.

H13 / SKD61

Hot-work steel with strong heat resistance. Standard for die casting molds and glass-fiber wear points.

2738 / 738H

Larger pre-hardened blocks with uniform hardness. Suited to big, deep-cavity molds and long runs.

2344 / 8407

Premium hot-work grades with excellent toughness. For high-impact cores, slides and gate inserts.

7075 / 6061 Aluminum

Light, fast to machine and cheap. Perfect for rapid tooling, bridge runs and design validation.

Beryllium Copper

High thermal conductivity. Used for cooling inserts that cut cycle time on thick or hot spots.

FAQ

Mold Making - Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask us most about custom mold making in China.

Mold making is the design and manufacturing of the steel or aluminum tool that shapes melted plastic or metal into a finished part. It covers mold design, DFM, CNC machining, EDM, polishing, trial and maintenance.
Cost depends on part size, number of cavities, steel grade, surface finish and mold life. A simple aluminum prototype mold costs far less than a hardened multi-cavity production tool. Send your 3D file and we will return a clear, itemized factory-direct quote within 24 hours.
Rapid aluminum tooling can ship in as little as 7 days. Standard production molds usually take 15 to 30 business days, depending on complexity, cavity count and finishing. Die casting molds and very complex tools can take longer.
We use P20 and 718H for general parts, NAK80 for high-gloss and optical parts, S136 and 2316 for corrosive or clear plastics, and H13 and SKD61 for die casting and wear points. Aluminum 7075 and 6061 are used for rapid tooling. We match the grade to your plastic, volume and budget.
Rapid tooling uses aluminum or soft steel and is built fast and cheap for prototypes and low volume, usually up to 10,000 shots. Production tooling uses hardened steel and is built to last 500,000 shots or more for mass production at the lowest unit cost.
We build single-cavity, multi-cavity and family molds. Common layouts are 2, 4, 8, 16 or more cavities, chosen to balance output, part tolerance and tooling cost. More cavities mean higher output and lower cost per part.
Aluminum rapid tools typically last 100 to 10,000 shots. Pre-hardened steel tools handle 10,000 to 100,000 shots. Hardened production steel tools last 500,000 shots or more with proper maintenance.
Our tooling is built to about plus or minus 0.01 mm on critical features. Molded part tolerance depends on the plastic, part geometry and shrinkage, and is typically plus or minus 0.02 mm to 0.05 mm. We confirm achievable tolerance during DFM.
Yes. Our engineers review wall thickness, draft, gate position, parting line and shrinkage before cutting starts, then suggest changes that cut cost, improve quality or speed up delivery. This review is free with every quote.
Yes. We accept mold transfers from other suppliers and provide repair, refurbishment, running changes and preventive maintenance. Send photos and drawings and we will assess the tool and quote the work.
Yes. All customer files and ideas are treated as confidential. We sign NDAs when needed and never share your data or reuse your tooling for other customers.
There is no strict MOQ. We support one-off prototypes, bridge runs and full production from the same factory. Quote turnaround is within 24 hours, and typical mold lead time is 7 to 30 business days depending on the tool.
