What is CNC Routing?

A simple guide for buyers and designers

CNC routing is a computer-controlled cutting process. A spinning router bit moves along X, Y, and Z axes to cut, carve, drill, and shape flat or sheet materials. Think of it as a very precise, very fast robotic cutting arm that follows your digital drawing exactly.

What it does best

CNC routing shines when you need to cut flat stock into precise shapes — especially in larger sizes that don't fit on a standard CNC mill. It handles 2D profiles, pockets, holes, slots, engravings, and light 3D surfacing on a wide range of materials.

CNC routing vs. CNC milling — what's the difference?

People often mix these up. Here is the simple version:

  • CNC routing works from flat sheet stock (plywood, acrylic, aluminum sheet, foam) and is fast for large panels, signs, and 2D/2.5D profiles.
  • CNC milling works from a solid block and is better for thick, dense metal parts with complex 3D geometry.

Not sure which process your part needs? Send us your file — our engineers will recommend the best (and most cost-effective) approach for free.

Design Tips

5 quick design tips for better (and cheaper) routed parts

Small design changes can save you money and improve quality. Here is what our engineers tell every new customer.

1

Add fillets to internal corners

Router bits are round, so they cannot cut sharp 90° internal corners. Add a fillet (radius) of at least 1.5× the bit diameter, or design a dogbone corner. This avoids expensive secondary operations.

2

Holes should not be smaller than the material thickness

As a rule of thumb, keep hole diameters at least as large as the material thickness. Smaller holes can cause bit deflection or breakage — and they cost more.

3

Use standard sheet thicknesses

Designing around readily available sheet sizes (3 mm, 6 mm, 12 mm, 18 mm, etc.) reduces material waste and cuts cost. Ask us for a list of stocked materials.

4

Provide vector files, not just images

DXF, DWG, AI, EPS, and STEP files give us clean, scalable geometry. A JPG or PNG alone will need to be redrawn, which adds time and can introduce errors.

5

Ask us before committing to tight tolerances

Tighter tolerances mean higher cost. If only a few features really need ±0.05 mm, tell us which ones — we can hold tight tolerances where they matter and use standard tolerances elsewhere to save you money.

FAQ

CNC Routing — Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions buyers ask us every day.

CNC routing is used to cut, shape, carve, and drill flat or sheet materials into precise parts. Common uses include signs and lettering, control panels, plastic enclosures, furniture components, foam packaging inserts, cabinet parts, jigs and fixtures, composite panels, and architectural elements. It is especially useful for large-format parts that do not fit on a standard CNC mill.
The main differences are in the workpiece and tooling. CNC routers typically cut flat sheet material using a high-RPM spindle and are fast for large panels and 2D/2.5D profiles in wood, plastic, foam, and thin aluminum. CNC mills cut from solid blocks of material using lower-RPM, higher-torque spindles and are better suited for thick, dense metal parts with complex 3D shapes. Put simply: large, flat parts often go to a router; small, thick, 3D metal parts usually go to a mill.
We route a wide range of materials including plywood, MDF, solid wood, acrylic (PMMA), ABS, PVC, HDPE, polycarbonate, polypropylene, POM/Delrin, nylon, PETG, polyurethane and polyethylene foam, polystyrene foam, tooling board, fiberglass/G10/FR4, carbon fiber panels, phenolic, Corian, aluminum sheet (6061, 5052), brass sheet, and Dibond/ACP aluminum composite panels.
Our CNC routers handle sheets up to 2000 × 4000 mm (about 6.5 × 13 feet). If your part is larger than a single sheet, we can cut multiple sections and design precision joinery (dowel joints, splines, finger joints) so the parts assemble accurately on your end.
Our standard tolerance is ±0.1 mm (±0.004 inch) on most routed parts. We can hold tighter tolerances down to ±0.05 mm on critical features, depending on material and geometry. Be sure to tell us which dimensions are critical when you request a quote.
Send us your drawings or CAD files (DXF, DWG, STEP, STP, IGES, STL, AI, EPS, or PDF). Most quotes come back within 4–8 hours on business days, and we never take longer than 24 hours. Every quote includes a free DFM (design for manufacturing) review by one of our engineers.
Standard lead time is 3–7 business days for prototypes and small runs. Production runs (hundreds to thousands of pieces) typically ship in 7–15 business days. Rush service as fast as 1–2 business days is available for urgent projects — let us know your deadline and we will do our best to meet it.
There is no strict MOQ. We routinely make one-off prototypes and single custom signs, and we also run production orders of thousands of pieces. Whether you need 1 part or 10,000, you will get the same level of engineering support and quality control.
Yes. Our China factory runs multiple CNC routers with automatic tool changers and vacuum hold-down tables, which lets us scale smoothly from a single prototype to high-volume production runs. You can start small and scale up without ever switching suppliers.
Absolutely. All customer files, designs, and project details are treated as strictly confidential. We never share, reuse, or display customer parts without written permission. We are happy to sign a mutual NDA (non-disclosure agreement) before you send sensitive files.
Yes, and it is free with every quote. Our in-house engineers review your design and point out issues that could affect cost, quality, or lead time — things like sharp internal corners, overly tight tolerances, or features that are difficult to machine. We suggest practical fixes before you commit to the order.
We accept DXF, DWG, STEP (STP), IGES (IGS), STL, AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS, and PDF. 2D vector files are preferred for flat routed parts. If you only have a hand sketch or a dimensioned drawing, send it over — our team can often work from that to create a quote.
Yes. In addition to cutting, we offer edge finishing, deburring, sanding, flame polishing (acrylic), painting, powder coating, anodizing (aluminum), laser engraving, silk screening, heat staking, hardware insertion (PEM nuts, standoffs), and full assembly. Tell us what finish you need and we will include it in your quote.
We can produce first-article samples for your approval before a full production run. Sample cost depends on the material and complexity, but in many cases the sample fee is credited back to you when you place the production order. Ask your account manager for details.
We ship worldwide to customers in North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Express shipping via DHL, FedEx, and UPS typically takes 3–5 business days. We also offer air freight and sea freight for larger orders. Shipping terms include EXW, FOB, and DDP (delivered duty paid) to your door.
For new customers, we accept T/T bank transfer, PayPal (for smaller orders), and credit card. Standard terms are 50% deposit to start production and 50% balance before shipment. Established repeat customers may qualify for net terms — talk to your account manager.
